A Possible World Experiment in Embodied Self-Discovery
Introduction
In a world that's increasingly digital, could the key to deeper self-reflection lie in the analog? This is my hypothesis. At a recent "Possible World" session, we embarked on an experiment to explore this question, tapping into the powerful connection between our minds and bodies through a unique blend of game play, dialogue, and expressive drawing.
Possible World Experience: More Than a Game
Possible World isn't just another online simulation; it's a catalyst for personal growth. By simulating real-world challenges and fostering introspection, it helps participants uncover their underlying motivations and beliefs.
But we wanted to go further, to bridge the gap between intellectual understanding and embodied experience. That's where our analog twist came in.

The Gut-Brain Connection: A Creative Bridge
The gut-brain axis is a hot topic in health and wellness, but it's more than just digestion. Our gut is often called our "second brain" due to its complex network of neurons and its influence on emotions, mood, and even decision-making.
To tap into this wisdom, we asked participants to:
Disconnect: Turn off cameras, close eyes, and focus on their breath and bodily sensations.
Reconnect: Open eyes, turn cameras back on, and translate those felt sensations into non-verbal expressions on paper. No words, just shapes, colors, scribbles – whatever emerged.
Share & Explore: In a safe space, participants shared their drawings and the insights they sparked.
What I Discovered
While we didn't formally assess the individual impact, the collective shift was palpable. As participants returned from their breakout sessions, a newfound sense of connection permeated the virtual room. The illustrations they'd created seemed to act as a bridge, fostering deeper understanding and empathy among the group.
Here's what stood out:
Visual Storytelling: The drawings added a layer of depth to their verbal reflections, conveying nuances and emotions that words alone couldn't capture. This visual language seemed to resonate deeply with others, sparking conversations that might not have emerged otherwise.
Diversity in Expression: The array of shapes, colors, and lines showcased the unique ways each individual processes emotions and experiences. This diversity was celebrated, reinforcing the idea that there's no single "right" way to feel or reflect.
Deeper Dialogue: The drawings became a launching pad for richer, more meaningful conversations. Participants felt more comfortable delving into personal values, fears, and aspirations, knowing their words were complemented by the visual expressions they'd created.
This experience highlighted the power of non-verbal communication in fostering connection and understanding. It also underscored the importance of embracing diverse forms of expression to access deeper layers of self-awareness and connect with others on a more authentic level.
Why This Works
Bypassing the Verbal Mind: By focusing on the body and expressing through art, we circumvent the logical, sometimes over-thinking mind.
Embodied Cognition: Our bodies hold wisdom that our minds don't always access. Drawing taps into this somatic intelligence.
Metaphorical Language: Abstract shapes and colors can represent complex feelings more accurately than words sometimes can.
Playful Exploration: The exercise invites a sense of playfulness and curiosity, making self-reflection less daunting.
Applying This to Your Own Reflection
Disconnect to Reconnect: Take time away from screens to tune into your body.
Experiment with Art: Doodle, paint, or sculpt – whatever medium feels right.
Trust Your Gut: Let your intuition guide your creative expression.
Reflect & Share: Journal about your art, or discuss it with a trusted friend.
Conclusion
The Possible World session demonstrated that combining analog tools with digital experiences can unlock new levels of self-awareness. By honoring the mind-body connection and embracing our innate creativity, we open doors to deeper self-understanding and personal growth.
